DON'T GET THE ALAN SUGAR!

Starting a new job is both exciting and daunting because, you're pleased with your achievement while also worried about making a great impression...

BE AUTHENTIC
A genuine display of emotions may leave you feeling embarrassed, or vulnerable however, you’ll be better off in the long run for knowing where you stand with your colleagues and of your prospects at the company. Be honest about how you feel but, always make sure you do so respectfully.

ATTEND COMPANY EVENTS
The best way to set the ball of progression rolling for yourself when you start a new job is to network amongst your colleagues if and when you can. It’s also a fab way to start building new friendships however, while you may want to be the life and soul of the party, it’s best to go easy on the booze unless you want to make an absolute boob of yourself and risk being fired!

DRESS COMFORTABLY YET ALWAYS APPROPRIATELY
If you’re going for the I am easy and have no self-respect look then dressing scantily clad is what you will do which might see you receive your marching orders soon after you start! Eek!!

GO TO LUNCH WITH [or at least talk to] DIFFERENT PEOPLE
Having your own lunch buddy, or crew is lovely however, getting to know as many of your colleagues as possible is good for your mental stimulation, those creative juices and, of course, you might learn something new, or even come across some amazing opportunities.

BE IN THE KNOW
Being able to identify who’s who and what they do, which department they work in, how they contribute to the objectives of the business etc can put you in a very good position for your own go-forward. You cannot swim in any pool until you know how deep / shallow / murky it is ;)

KEEP ADDING TO YOUR PORTFOLIO
With each step you take up the ladder, be that within your role, or through an opportunity / promotion, update your CV. Should anyone [internal, or external] request a copy of your credentials you’ll have them ready and it’s a very good look to not keep anyone waiting!

KNOW WHEN TO SWITCH OFF COMPLETELY
Take your annual leave and do so sporadically making sure that you disconnect from work for the entire duration. Time to recharge, breathe, to be with family, friends and yourself, to travel, to have fun outside of work etc is super important. When you feel good you do well which is what you want both personally and professionally.

LOG THINGS OF IMPORTANCE
Make a note of the highs and lows for reference purposes. You never know when you will need to recall / share the details of a certain incident, or a particular skill learned [that was applied to a ‘one-off’ project] which needs to be used again.

MAINTAIN YOUR PRIVACY and DIGNITY
There is nothing wrong with an ‘office romance’ and it’s so lovely when real, committed relationships develop however, you do not need to make your private business the talk of the entire company! Keep everything going down [no pun intended here] between you and your significant [work] other strictly hush and you’ll most probably have a much better connection with them than if everyone were to get involved.
